DESCRIPTION:

This is a FAIRLY NEW FIND of Spessartite & Hessonite Garnet coming from Afghanistan. You can read the recent write-up for this in Gems & Gemology. The color of this material is just phenomenal and it falls into a very broad spectrum! Please be aware that this rough is a mixture of Spessartite Rough and Hessonite Rough (Possibly other Garnet as well) which are generally included species of Garnet and hence, it is extremely difficult to acquire eye-clean to flawless rough in either species. Most of this material WILL have at least minor inclusions. This should NOT significantly impact the cleaner finished stones.

PLEASE NOTE: The three select stones above were cobbed from larger pieces and are sub gram pieces!

We have rough graded this material as being 10-15%+ facet grade. This is a rough estimate and includes both low and high end facet rough. Most worthwhile stones fall between 2 and 15 carats. The bulk of the best material is 5 carats and under with quite a few stones that will cut eye-clean or very slightly included. The remainder is a mix of various cabbing grades and faceting rough that needs to be cobbed. Please note that a 3 kilo sample will not necessarily accurately represent the above percentages. You really need to purchase a 5-10+ kilo lot to get a good mix of the material!

Please note that MOST of this material is Hessonite from several test runs that we did; however, there are occasionally some Spessartites that get dropped into the mix on location in Afghanistan and/or Pakistan.
COOL FACTS:

  1. This material has been sorted into what we call second generation mine run. What this means is that the local Afghans that sort this material at our mines have probably gone through roughly 20-50 kilos of junk for every 1 kilo of Cabbing and Facet Grade Rough. They have picked out everything that was nicely colored and either translucent or transparent. Please note that most if not all of this material HAS been oiled as that is the typical practice IN Pakistan for this material.
